FREE to Pennsylvania teachers
The Path to Freedom was a free week-long immersion course on African American life in antebellum America, the abolition movement, the Civil War and Reconstruction. Teachers discovered engaging ways to share Civil War history, creatd new lessons that tie into PA’s new Standards Aligned System, and considered the 150th anniversary of the Civil War within the context of contemporary events.
Educators enjoyed special behind-the-scenes visits to:
the National Constitution Center, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Mid-Atlantic branch of the National Archives, Chester County Historical Society, the African American Museum of Philadelphia, the Kennett Underground
Railroad Center and the Union League.
Faculty included :
- Dr. Randall Miller, St. Joseph’s University, scholar-in-residence
- Dr. Steven Frank, National Constitution Center
- Dr. Thomas Sugrue, the University of Pennsylvania.
- Dr. Katherine Wilson, Georgia State University
and
Lecture & lunch with scholar and author James Horton, Ph.D., George Washington University
