About the Guide

This keyword-searchable research guide will aid students and other researchers in locating Philadelphia-area sites with books, manuscripts, pamphlets, ephemera, and other documents. The topics surveyed include: The Home Front/Civilians, The African-American Community, Militaria and Diaries, The Medical Contribution, and Lincoln in Philadelphia.

(select one to view their holdings, or select the Philadelphia's Collections tab at top). The first page of each institutional entry contains important contact information, followed by the survey of the institution's Civil War-related collections. This guide is not only a survey of the collections across the region, but a hub to the organizations’ more in-depth and/or related collections.

This guide will be updated throughout the sesquicentennial, as we revise and add surveys from other institutions. We invite users of this guide to give us their feedback and send us their ideas about how to expand and refine the guide. Please email: Jon Shaw at jshaw4@upenn.edu

Questions about the guide in general and materials related to the Civil War in particular can be directed to: Jon Shaw at jshaw4@upenn.edu
